Support available for energy costs
As winter approaches, concerns about rising energy costs often loom large. The combination of increased heating and electricity usage can put a strain on household budgets. However, the UK Government does offer support for those in need.
The Warm Home Discount
The Warm Home Discount gives you £150 off energy bills over the winter. If eligible, this discount should be automatically added to your energy bill. You will receive a letter between October 2023 and March 2024 telling you about the discount if you’re eligible. The letter will tell you if you need to call a helpline to confirm your details. If you do not get a letter and you think you’re eligible, you must contact the Warm Home Discount Scheme before 29 February 2024. Find out more about eligibility here.
The Winter Fuel Payment
The Winter Fuel Payment allows people who were born on or before the 25th of September 1957 to receive between £250 and £600 to help you pay for your heating bills. If eligible, you will receive this payment automatically. For more information click here.
Cost of living payments
You could be eligible for up to three cost of living payments depending on your circumstances. If you are eligible, you will receive the corresponding benefits automatically

The Household Support Fund
The Household Support Fund has been extended to March 2024, supporting with payments towards the rising cost of food, energy, and water bills.
The Cold Weather Payment Scheme
The Cold Weather Payment Scheme, which started on the 1st of November 2022 gives eligible households £25 a week for each seven-day period of cold weather. The average temperature needs to have been less than zero degrees for seven consecutive days. If eligible, you’ll be paid automatically. Find out if your area is due a payment here.
