Embracing British Sign Language: ECL’s path to Inclusivity

British Sign Language (BSL) is a vibrant, essential language, used by over 150,000 adults in the UK – according to British Deaf Association (BDA). For those who use it, BSL is more than a communication tool; it is a bridge to inclusivity, linking the deaf and hearing communities and allowing for seamless, respectful interaction. BSL’s importance is now being recognised even further, with its recent addition as a GCSE subject option in England. This step is more than symbolic; it makes learning BSL accessible to younger generations, empowering them with a valuable skill for inclusive communication.

The importance of learning BSL

In any community, effective communication is key—and BSL offers an incredible opportunity to connect with others more inclusively. From schools to workplaces, knowing BSL enables people to better engage with the deaf community, creating richer and more accessible environments. BSL skills are invaluable in any field, whether it is customer service, education, healthcare, or any role that involves interaction. By learning BSL, individuals can break down barriers, creating a more inclusive society where everyone feels seen and understood.

Insights from ECL’s ongoing BSL course

At ECL, our commitment to inclusivity and empowerment is highlighted by our Sensory Service, who introduced the BSL Level 1 course earlier this year for our team members, Sensory Actional Alliance partners and members of public. This course has already sparked enthusiasm and growth within our team, creating a solid foundation of BSL knowledge that we hope will continue to expand.

One of our participants, Saydi Appleby, a Sensory Training Facilitator at ECL, has been particularly enthusiastic about her journey with BSL. She began her BSL studies this autumn, motivated by a passion for inclusion and personal experiences working alongside deaf individuals.

Why did you want to join a BSL course?
Saydi: "I’ve wanted to learn BSL since 2018 when I worked in the entertainment industry. One of our guests was a young deaf girl, and one of my colleagues was able to communicate with her using BSL. Watching their interaction was so moving—it made me realize how important it is for everyone to learn basic sign language, especially in customer-facing roles.”

How has the course been? Is it challenging?
Saydi: “It is a bit challenging but incredibly rewarding. Our tutor, Jason, is profoundly deaf, which means the course is fully immersive—we sign with each other constantly. This approach has helped me understand and pick up the language quickly, even though I sometimes struggle with specific signs and the fingerspelling alphabet.”

Would you recommend this course to others?
“Absolutely! One in three people in the UK are either deaf, hearing-impaired, or have tinnitus, so knowing some BSL is beneficial for everyone. Having a basic level of BSL knowledge can create opportunities for meaningful connections.”

The Future of BSL at ECL

BSL’s introduction as a GCSE opens doors for young people across the country, and at ECL, we are committed to supporting this growing interest by expanding our BSL training offerings. By 2027, ECL are planning to offer BSL Levels 1-3.

For anyone considering learning BSL, Saydi encourages, “Imagine how much easier life could be if we all signed a little more BSL. It is about giving everyone a voice.”

With the national recognition of BSL and the addition of courses like ours, we hope to build a more inclusive society, one sign at a time.
