Empowering Inclusive Employment: Amy's Journey to Independence

Amy, a 27-year-old with a zest for life embarked on a life-changing journey towards inclusive employment with the support of ECL (Essex Cares Limited) Inclusive Employment program. Through perseverance, guidance, and a supportive network, Amy not only found fulfilling work but also gained newfound confidence and independence.

Background

In 2019, Amy was participating in a work-based training program at Greenacres, an ECL day centre on the outskirts of Chelmsford. She was also engaging in the Mitie Ready2Work initiative, the pilot employment scheme jointly run by Essex County Council and ECL that went on to become the ground-breaking Inclusive Employment programme.

With aspirations for part-time employment in retail or catering, Amy secured a position at Morrisons supermarket, where she remained for over a year. However, challenges such as early starts, and public transport hindered her experience.

Challenges and solutions

Amy's determination to find the right job remained unwavering. Caroline Giess and Emma Young of the ECL Inclusive Employment team played pivotal roles in Amy's journey. Undeterred by the Covid lockdowns at the time, Caroline facilitated Amy's job search and Emma approached Perryfields Infant School, where Amy was given the opportunity of a job trial.

In January 2022 Amy secured a cleaning role at the school, working 15 hours a week. Caroline helped Amy to navigate transport obstacles by applying for 'Access to Work', which provides funding for taxi journeys.

Support and progress

With the assistance of Linda Thompson, ECL Inclusive Employment Job Coach, Amy seamlessly transitioned into her new role. Linda's guidance during the induction phase and subsequent coaching enabled Amy to work independently within a remarkably short period.

The supportive environment fostered by the headteacher, Amanda Reid, and Amy’s friendly co-workers were key to Amy finding her feet so quickly.

Within just six weeks Amy no longer required Linda’s support and Patrick Loe, Inclusive Employment Job Sustainment Officer took over as Amy’s key contact at ECL. He checks in with her and the head teacher on a regular basis to ensure that everything is still going well and to guide Amy through any new e-learning requirements.

Achievements and reflections

Amy's growth and confidence were evident as she reflected on her journey. She expressed gratitude for the opportunities and support provided by the Inclusive Employment team: “I love my job, I used to be quite shy but now I can talk to people much easier.”

“ I really enjoy the cleaning; I particularly like it during the school holidays as then we get to do a deep clean. Working at Perryfields has changed me for the better and I don’t ever want to lose my job.”

“I couldn’t have done any of it without the Inclusive Employment team, Linda has been lovely, and I know that there’s always someone on hand to talk to.”

Testimonial and future aspirations

Amy's story highlights the importance of self-belief, resilience, and the willingness to seek help when needed.

Amy's dedication is an inspiration to others facing similar challenges. When asked what she would say to another candidate about to embark on the world of employment she said: “You don’t need to be nervous, just be yourself, listen to what your supervisor says and just ask for help if you’re not sure, and if you get it wrong just keep trying, never give up!”

With her newfound confidence Amy’s aspiration is to move into a supported living flat, a step that would bring her even greater independence and sense of achievement.

Conclusion

Amy's journey illustrates the strength of inclusive employment to empower individuals with learning disabilities and/or autism. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering support, Amy not only found meaningful work but also discovered her potential for growth and independence.

As a school committed to equality and by working in collaboration with ECL we have enabled Amy to gain employment, grow in confidence and self-belief.  As a school, we are fully inclusive and by working together Amy has thrived in paid employment as part of our team.  With ongoing high quality support Amy continues to succeed in her role and is hard working and enthusiastic.
