Ready to Work: ECL and Mitie partnership aims to help more people into employment
Mitie, the UK's leading facilities management company, and Essex Cares Limited (ECL) have teamed up to support adults with disabilities who are seeking paid employment.
With support from Essex County Council, the Mitie Foundationhas a work placement programme, Ready2Work, at the County Hall campus in Chelmsford.
Supported by ECL, adults with learning disabilities have participated in an eight week work placement where they learned hands on skills in real life workplaces, gaining confidence and experience within a supported programme.
A Level Three Ready2Work qualification has been awarded to each candidate for successfully completing their placements.
ECL has worked closely with Mitie to prepare candidates for the workplace.
This included interview preparation, CV writing and work skills.
Candidates were given the opportunity to learn about dressing for the workplace, professional conduct, networking and day to day situations within an office environment.
Seven placements were available including portering, postal services, office administration, reception and catering.
Each participant was given a mentor, and there was a weekly meeting with Mitie programme leader Dominic Skelhorn to ensure there was continued support throughout the duration of the placement.
ECL Community Care Assistant Caroline Giess said all trainees have experienced a huge learning growth through the programme.
I’ve had trainees tell me how much they’ve enjoyed their own individual responsibilities growing and how committed they are to their workplaces. It’s been incredible to watch each person's journey.
The first candidates enjoyed a presentation ceremony to mark the completion of their placements, with two candidates already offered paid apprenticeships immediately following the completion of their chosen courses.
They really do it for the candidates… they’re very passionate. They were unhesitant , really nice…They’ve got time for you. Mitie have been just great. And Caroline [ECL] was always available too, like a job coach. It’s been great.
